Overview

What Is Dental Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting rebuilds jawbone that has been lost, so there is enough solid foundation to hold a dental implant. Grafting material is placed where the bone is thin or missing, and over the following months your body replaces it with your own new bone. It is one of the most common ways to make implants possible when bone has shrunk. Bone is usually lost for a simple reason: once a tooth is gone, the bone that held it is no longer stimulated and begins to shrink. The longer a tooth has been missing, the more bone tends to disappear. Rather than being told there is nothing to anchor an implant to, you get the foundation rebuilt first. Pricing depends on how much bone needs to be built and is confirmed after your consultation and scan.

Benefits

Why Bone Grafting Matters

The step that turns "you don't have enough bone" into a solid base for implants.
01

Makes implants possible

Grafting rebuilds bone that has shrunk away, so an implant can be placed where there was not enough support before.
02

Uses your own new bone

The graft acts as a scaffold that your body gradually replaces with living bone, giving the implant a natural foundation.
03

Planned for Your Implant Case

Grafting is performed here as part of your implant plan, rather than referred to a separate surgeon at another office.
04

Planned in 3D

A cone-beam scan maps exactly where bone is missing, so grafting material goes only where it is needed.
Process

How Bone Grafting Works

1

Consultation and 3D Scan

We take a cone-beam scan and review it with you chair-side, measuring where and how much bone is missing. This confirms whether grafting is needed and how extensive it must be.
2

Treatment Planning

The graft and any implant are planned together in three dimensions. You leave knowing whether the implant goes in at the same time or after healing, and what it costs.
3

The Graft

Grafting material is placed where bone needs to be rebuilt. Depending on your needs, health history, and procedure, sedation options may include Oral Sedation, IV Sedation, or General Anesthesia. In some cases, an implant can be placed during the same visit.
4

Healing

Over the following months your body replaces the graft with its own new bone. This is what gives the future implant a stable foundation, and it is worth the wait.
5

Implant Placement

Once the new bone has matured, implant placement can be planned based on the healed site, your scan, and the restorative goals established for your case.
COST

What Grafting Adds

Grafting is rarely something you budget for on its own. It is the groundwork that gives an implant something solid to hold.

QUOTED WITH YOUR IMPLANT PLAN

A small socket graft and a larger ridge rebuild are different pieces of work. Your figure comes from your CBCT scan, since how much bone is missing decides what is involved.

Why Choose Restore for Bone Grafting

Many practices place implants but send grafting out to a specialist, splitting your treatment across two offices and two fees. Restore does the grafting, the implant, and the final tooth in one place, with one team who planned the whole thing from your first scan. Bone loss rarely means being turned away here; it means one more step, handled under the same roof.

Bone grafting is planned around the implant site and your restorative goals, with the treatment sequence reviewed before care begins.

Graft and implant planned together from a single 3D scan.

One team accountable from the graft through to your final tooth.

A board-certified implant dentist who performs the procedure personally.

How much does bone grafting cost?

Pricing depends on how much bone needs to be built and whether an implant is placed at the same time, so it is confirmed after your consultation and scan rather than quoted as a single figure. You leave with an itemized plan.

Why do I need a bone graft for an implant?

An implant needs enough solid bone to anchor into. Where a tooth has been missing for a while, the bone often shrinks below what an implant requires, and grafting rebuilds it to the volume needed.

Where does the grafting material come from?

Grafting materials vary, and we go through the options with you at your consultation. Whichever is used, it acts as a scaffold that your own body gradually replaces with living bone.

Is bone grafting painful?

Most people find the procedure more comfortable than expected. It is performed with appropriate anesthesia, and depending on your needs, health history, and procedure, sedation options may include Oral Sedation, IV Sedation, or General Anesthesia. Some swelling and soreness afterward is normal and usually improves over the following days.

Can the implant go in at the same time as the graft?

Sometimes. If enough bone remains to hold the implant steady, grafting and placement can happen together. If the deficiency is larger, the graft heals first and the implant follows. Your scan decides which path fits.

How long does a bone graft take to heal?

Most grafts take several months to mature into solid bone before an implant can be placed into them. Smaller grafts done alongside an implant may heal in less time. Your plan sets the timeline.

What is recovery like after a bone graft?

Expect some swelling and mild soreness for a few days, managed with standard care and simple aftercare instructions. Most people return to normal activity within a day or two.

Does insurance or financing cover bone grafting?

We work with many dental insurance plans and can verify your benefits, estimate what your plan may contribute, and help you understand anticipated out-of-pocket costs. Coverage varies by plan, but insurance may contribute toward bone grafting or related procedures. Any remaining balance can often be combined with flexible financing options.
